Stories of the broken hearted

Rivkah a mother of 10, Rivka lives and works in a local store. The wages, unfortunately, are far from enough to pay rent and a few of the bills. In her house the children are hungry. The Refrigerator is literally empty.

Every evening the children..........>>
Dear Friend,

Five years ago Meir B., a lonely, confused 35-year-old man, was wandering the streets of Jerusalem. Hungry, tired and cold, he sat down on a bench to rest. He dreamed of food, steaming hot food that would make the constant hunger pangs disappear. He dreamed of a bed, a soft, downy bed that would soothe his aching bones.

Instead, he was confronted with reality.

“Sorry, you can’t stay here. Please leave.” Meir heard the words. He saw the face of the officer who was talking to him. Yet he did not move. For where would he go?

The Jerusalem Open House was established with just such individuals in mind. It opened its doors to the Meirs of Jerusalem – the loneliest, most destitute and disoriented members of society. It became their haven, the place to go to when there was nowhere else.

The beautiful city of Jerusalem is, unfortunately, home to hundreds of disturbed, abandoned Jews. Their haunted eyes cry out for help. They beg for simple things: a nourishing meal, a shirt to wear, a hot shower, a soft bed.

The Jerusalem Open House responds to their pleas. Each day they serve about 150 breakfasts and 250 dinners to the hungry. Additionally, they provide clothing and shelter to the most needy of these individuals.

Even more importantly, the Jerusalem Open House staff and volunteers teach these men basic life skills so that a self-supporting future becomes possible for them.

With Pesach nearly here, it is imperative that we support these lost souls. Holidays are a particularly lonely time for people without family or friends. Let us open our hearts to them, just as the Jerusalem Open House opens its doors to them.

Food, clothing and shelter cost money, and funds are low this year. But the number of poor people is not low... the number of the hungry is not low... the number of the homeless is not low... In fact, they have grown and increased!

The Jerusalem Open House must expand. But they don’t have the means to do so.

Please help them keep their doors open, wide open. Your support enables another starved soul to be fed, another cold man to be clothed, another homeless person to have a place to lay his head.

Become a partner with Jerusalem Open House. Your tax-deductible contribution of:

$36 will provide two full weeks of breakfasts;
$72 covers a month of nutritious breakfasts;
$250 supplies room and board for a month;
$432 takes care of a half-year’s worth of breakfasts for a hungry and forgotten Jew;
$1000 means six months of food and shelter for an unfortunate soul....

This Pesach, as you chant “Kol dichfin yeisei veyeichel,” do so with the knowledge that you have, indeed, fed the hungry.

In the merit of this great mitzvah, may you and your family enjoy health, wealth and happiness.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Chaim Cohen
